The lunar new year is just around the corner and we will soon be welcoming in the year of the dog. Soon after the Losar celebrations, Rinpoche will be conducting his first retreat of the Dog year in Ipoh, Malaysia. We also have an exciting announcement regarding this years Bhutan pilgrimage trip this September.

Recent Events
Raksha Tötreng Puja, Jan 13-15, 2018

This puja is completed annually by our Ka-nying Shedrub Ling monastery. It is meant to promote harmony and world peace, and to dispel all negativity and obstacles before the start of the Tibetan New Year. This year it was led by Kyabje Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, Kyabje Tulku Urgyen Yangsi Rinpoche and Kyabgön Phakchok Rinpoche. On the last day, the procession of lamas gathered in a field behind the monastery where a wrathful tsampa effigy, embodying negative energy, was ritually burned. The text for this puja is extracted from the Tukdrub Barché Künsel cycle of the Chokling Tersar. Raksha Tötreng is a manifestation of Guru Rinpoche. Phakchok Rinpoche has taught about Raksha Tötreng in a recent Guru Rinpoche Day video which you can view by clicking here
Hong Kong
On January 20th and 21st, Kyabgön Phakchok Rinpoche bestowed a Lama Norlha Empowerment, taught on the Ngondro Practice as well as the Life Story of Guru Rinpoche.
Winter Sadhana Ritual Course, Nepal
Each winter, the Chokgyur Lingpa foundation organizes a sadhana ritual course to instruct Dharma students in all aspects of ritual practice, covering the use of ritual instruments (such as bell, vajra, and hand drum), proper organization of a shrine, construction of torma ritual cakes, as well as the underlying meaning and actual sadhana practice utilizing visualization, melody, and traditional sequencing.
This year’s SRC, Dec 15, 2017 to Jan 11, 2018 was organized slightly differently, to great success. Instead of introducing a different sadhana practice each week, this year’s course was longer and focused primarily on a single practice—the profound Vajrasattva practice of Sangtik Dorsem. This gave the course more the feeling of an “approach retreat” and allowed the ten participants to connect deeply with their practice.
The location this year was hosted at our monastery in Chapagaon which allowed us walk through the sacred Vajravarahi forest to visit the 1000 year-old Vajravarahi temple during breaks. Participants from a variety of countries were patiently and compassionately taught by the retreat master, Drupla Sherab Dorje-la, who has done extensive retreat and served many years as the Chant Master at Ka-Nying Shedrup Ling in Boudha, Nepal. His teachings touched our hearts and inspired us in our practice. He was assisted by the ritual master Tsondru Gyatso-la, who demonstrated how to make a variety of tormas as well as how to perform the duties of chöpön (ritual master) and ümdze (chant master).
Indonesia is blessed to have Khenpo Gyaltsen visit 3 cities, Jakarta, Jambi and Palembang at the beginning of the year 2018. We are happy that for the first time, a two full day Tara Retreat in Jakarta was successfully held with a total of 40 participants. Khenpo la also had been giving many teachings in both private and public. One of his public teaching was held two times in one of Buddhist school in Jakarta.
During his visit to Jambi and Palembang city, Khenpo la managed to gather with participants of Dharma streams groups and also gave teachings to the youth in one of the universities in Palembang. He also managed to conduct prayers in the famous Atisa holy site in Jambi.
On 3rd and 4th Feb 2018, Khenpo Gyaltsen led a 2 day Tara retreat in Singapore. Participants recited the 21 praises of Tara many times over the course of the retreat. During the retreat, Khenpo taught about the main points of the Tara Sadhana, benefits of practicing the sadhana, reciting the mantra, and supplication to Arya Tara. During the retreat, participants also had an interactive and lively question and answers, and even debate with Khenpo-la!
On 30, 31, 5, 6, 7, 9 Feb 2018, Khenpo-la taught from Chapters 1,6, and 7 of the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra by Śāntideva. During these teachings, Khenpo-la gave a concise yet comprehensive summaries of the chapters and verses, and also dispelled many of the audiences doubts via Q&A.
United Kingdom
Upon the invitation of our Rangjung Yeshe Oddiyana UK sangha, Tulku Migmar traveled to the UK to oversee several sangha meetings and the final phase of setting up our physical center there. During the Sonam Losar, Tulku led the sangha and community in prayers and shared dharma advice with the gathering. And during his time, Tulku gave teachings some of the sangha there as well.

Global Magnetizing Accumulation
Six months ago, Rinpoche requested that all his students take up the magnetizing practice entitled “Giant Cloud of Blessings” as part of their daily practice.
“Learning how to work together to make very vast aspirations as a global Sangha to magnetize excellent conditions for Dharma resounding and all pure aspirations to be fulfilled.”

~ Kyabgön Phakchok Rinpoche

Winter Fundraiser
We are fast approaching the end of our Winter Fundraiser. To date we have received a total of $23,683 from 112 donors. That completes almost 30% of our goal to raise $80,000 by the end of Losar.
Thanks to each and everyone of you for your generous donations.

In support of the mission of Samye Institute, Phakchok Rinpoche has crafted a small number of pieces of calligraphy of the seed syllable HŪṂ (HUNG). This seed syllable is said to represent the awakened mind and is found in many mantras. We have included a snapshot of one of these beautiful pieces.
Everyone who donates to the Samye Winter Fundraiser will be entered in the drawing. The winners will be chosen randomly from an algorithmic based drawing. For each dollar donated, you will receive one entry into the drawing.
Don’t miss your opportunity to receive one of these exquisite pieces.
